Patrick Gallacher at Partick Thistle

Patrick Gallacher’s move to Partick Thistle for the 1907-08 season marked a remarkable turnaround in fortunes. During the final months of his time at Luton Town, he had appeared only three times for the club’s reserve side and his future in senior football was uncertain.

Within weeks of arriving at Meadowside, however, Scottish newspapers were praising him as one of the finest centre-halves in the country.

This excerpt from the Scottish Referee, reporting on the opening match of the season against Morton in August 1907, suggests that the move suited both Patrick and Partick Thistle.

“Gallacher, from Luton, figured at centre half with great credit. He was originally a forward with Duntocher Hibs but has thickened out considerably since then. Once he becomes better acquainted at Meadowside he should be even more successful than he was on Saturday.”

Scottish Referee, 13 August 1907.

By the end of August, Patrick’s performances were continuing to attract praise.

“Partick Thistle have a splendid centre-half in Gallacher. He did the work of two players, and was a master at breaking up combination.”

Dundee Courier, 26 August 1907.

Praise for his performances soon extended beyond Glasgow.

“We have also in Gallacher a centre half who is without his superior in Scotland, bar Charlie Thomson.”

Dundee Weekly News, 28 September 1907.

Patrick Gallacher quickly became a key member of the side. He was trusted to captain the team in the absence of Neilly Gibson and was now playing regular first-team football against some of Scotland’s leading clubs, including Hearts, St Mirren, Celtic and Rangers.

By the end of the season, he had made 31 appearances and scored twice. Although his spell at Meadowside lasted only a single season, it restored his reputation and established him as one of Partick Thistle’s most dependable players.
