Acknowledgements

There are many people to thank for the help, encouragement and inspiration that made this website possible. In many cases, their contributions go back years before the website itself was conceived.

First and foremost, I must thank my father, Terence Gallacher. His memoirs have been an invaluable resource throughout this project. Every time I return to them looking for information on one subject, I seem to discover a clue to another. He cared deeply about family history and was always eager to learn more about the Gallacher family and Patrick’s career.

I would also like to thank my cousins, Colin and Don Gallacher, sons of Donald Gallacher, Head Groundsman at Wembley Stadium from 1974 to 1985. Colin has been a constant source of encouragement to both myself and my father, and published his father’s memoir, Get Off My Pitch. Don carried out extensive research into the Gallacher family tree and Patrick Gallacher’s association with Tottenham Hotspur, and made valuable contacts with fellow researchers including Andy Porter.

My thanks also go to Andrew Riddoch, co-author of When the Whistle Blows. Andrew has been generous with his time in answering occasional research queries and incorporated information supplied by my father, Terence Gallacher, into later editions of his work.

I am particularly grateful to Peter Lee Hawkridge, who shared photographs, facts and stories relating to Patrick’s time at Barrow AFC, and to Peter Naylor, who provided statistics relating to Patrick and Arthur Gallacher’s appearances for the club; William Sheridan of the Thistle Archive for information on Patrick’s time at Partick Thistle; and John Norman and Steve Durham for their help regarding Workington AFC.

This research would not have been possible without access to newspaper archives. I am particularly grateful to the British Newspaper Archive and Newspapers.com, whose collections provided many of the match reports, articles and contemporary accounts that helped reconstruct Patrick Gallacher’s career.

I would also like to acknowledge the historians, archivists, librarians and volunteers who preserve records and make them available to researchers through archives, libraries and online collections.
